Gouache painting with India Ink- Masking fluid resist- Shellac sprayed with India Ink- India Ink with bleach. Here’s a quick list with links so you can try them yourself. I’ve found a few tutorials in addition to these techniques that sound amazingly fun. So, these are some of the things I’ve tried this week with my new india inks. Once again, when the ink dries, it becomes permanent and you can leave it as a top layer, or use more wax layers on top. I used my calligraphy tips to sketch and color in the tree, then I added a couple layers of wax before I spritzed some diluted red ink onto the branches, as a way to add leaves without drawing them individually. You can sketch onto tissue or rice paper and add it on top of the wax, but I didn’t want to see the edges of the paper. This is an example of a sketch directly onto encaustic wax. A little more work, but it’s a way to be able to have all the colors stand out against a black background. Once I was finished with the white, I used some of the other colors on top so they would stand out. These inks are pretty intense, and adding a little water can make them last longer and go further without taking much away from their brilliancy. Though the colored inks soaked in and didn’t show that well, the white is amazing on the black. I was curious to see how these inks worked on black paper. These are from a sketch I made in my black journal. Anyone who makes polymer clay jewelry, charms, or even art journals- this adds another dimension to the possibilities open to you. I baked the clay before I painted it, but once the ink dries, it’s permanent. This is a really simple polymer clay pendant I made. I’m going to be using this technique a lot. As long as I didn’t rub it really hard, the ink stayed fast. Even thick drips of alcohol ink had no effect on the india ink once it was dry. I tried it two different ways- india ink first, followed by alcohol ink, and vice versa. I colored the acetate using alcohol inks and india ink. Black and white cardstock with clear acetate attached to top with brads. I decided to try a few different techniques to see just how versatile they are. Nope, these different sets of inks come with as many as 12 colors, all vibrant and versatile. I used to think that India ink was only available in one color- black. So the quest to find different and creative ways or organizing different materials into art is a constant, never ending adventure, and if you’re anything like me, becoming proficient in using a few materials over and over again isn’t satisfying enough- new materials need to be found and experimented with until we become proficient in using them, and we continue to find new things to work with. The act of creation can be fairly difficult without anything to create with. How about a video describing its no-doubt complex development so far. Want something more “Apple-ish?” I’ll compromise. We’ve seen them plenty of times already, but for one to actually be produced on stage during the keynote is the stuff legends are made of. No render? Then give one of the mock-ups a lick of paint, and use that. There was once a time when we genuinely had no idea what to expect from Apple or its events.I don’t want to hear excuses either. Cook? Instead of another generic, self-congratulatory video about pretty people using Apple products, why don’t you whip out an early prototype of the iPhone 6, project some specs up on the screen, and say something like “September is going to be awesome!” We all know its coming, and thanks to the massive amount of leaked information already available, we’ve got a pretty good idea of what it’s all about, too. So here’s an idea, Apple: If you’re so keen on demonstrating products we can’t get our hands on, how about spending some time on the iPhone 6? I mean, come on. Yes, it’s an Apple event, so there’s always a buzz about it, but ever since it stopped bringing the iPhone along, WWDC’s keynote has become a slow, two-hour slog filled with tedious stats, a few in-jokes, and software that isn’t available yet. What was once the shining jewel in Apple’s annual event calendar is now nothing more than a half-hearted, heart-breaking tease. Sadly, and for the first time in recent memory, I don’t care. You're working on it in consecutive days, so they're all in your head. I also don't work on more than one book at a time so, in the case of a standalone, recall isn't a problem. If you're really in a bind, and if you keep an archive, you can go rooting through and find it. I always use my regular voice for the mains, for instance others just come back. But, really, since you're strictly a narrator, the main character voices are generally interchangeable. Sebastian: I have a pretty good memory, so most of the characters' voices I can recollect fairly quickly. Viviana: Along the lines of the previous question, how do you manage or what is your process of remember what the character from a previous book sounds like when they reappear in a new book (or if not part of a series, but standalone, characters as they pop in and out of the story)? Maybe it's a curse of having what I'm told is a "sympathetic" face. For some reason, I've attracted a lot of those over the years. Basically, you can just let it rip, especially when those characters are complete assholes or idiots. You can also cross-reference or combine them. I use a lot of voices from people I've known, met, or have simply overheard across the ages, so to speak. Most of the time you can really cut loose. The r al fun for me comes from secondary or tertiary characters. Sebastian: A lot of that is either told to you (as mentioned above) or certain details are written in the book. Viviana: How do you go about selecting how each of the characters are going to sound like? (i.e. Another important- probably the most important- thing is telling you what they don't want. Sebastian: Basically they provide descriptions of characters- ages, background, histories- or they'll specifically identify a character's regional or foreign accent. Viviana: What sort of information does the author (or the publishers) provide you prior to starting the narrating process of the book(s)? But most of them are usually very open to the narrator's own ideas. They'll tell you what they're looking for in a specific character, what they like etc etc. I tend to say yes all the time, so building a relationship w/ the author and what she wants just comes about naturally. Sometimes they'll contact the narrator directly, asking if you're available. Lately, though, I've been in much more direct contact with authors. Viviana: For you, how does an author/narrator relationship begin? It's a means to give casting directors an idea of your range, accents, and style, among other things.) Once he thought we had enough material he began to send it around to casting directors he knows and has worked with over the years.
